The top 10 sales make it clear again this year: Descriptive and short domains are the most popular and valuable. In particular, short domains ending in .com are sought after by buyers from China.

New gTLDs: Crypto currency it is!
While domain sales around the crypto currency trend flourished and saw an immense increase in demand in 2017, it was also interesting to see that these trends were especially significant within the New gTLD category. When looking at the top 10 public sales, 7 of them belong to the fintech category. However, the top 10 list doesn’t say anything about a preferred new gTLD itself. While .com is king among the legacy TLDs, each TLD of the top 10 new gTLD list is different.
Domains bought by the insurance and security industries are too long
In 2017, the longest domain masterofbusinessadministration.com has 30 characters - a maximum of 63 characters is allowed. On average, most domains sold have only eight characters. When we look at sales occurring in the past year, the portion of domains that are longer than 20 characters are mainly German-language domains. And the security and insurance industries blow all other competition away when it comes to purchasing the longest addresses.
