What is a "TLD?"

"TLD" stands for "Top Level Domain."  A Top Level Domain refers to all singular domain extensions.  There are three subcategories of TLDs:
  • gTLD:  Generic Top Level Domain.  This refers to an extension that applies to most international areas, such as .com, .net, .org, .info, etc.
  • ccTLD:  Country Code Top Level Domain.  This refers to country-specific extensions, and may be available for registration for citizens of the associated country.  Example: .us for the United States or .de for Germany.
  • sTLD:  Sponsored Top Level Domain.  This refers to an extension that was proposed by an independent agency which establishes and enforces regulations or restrictions on the registration or use of the TLD.  .Mobi and .pro are two examples of this type of extension.
